My research focuses on how global change influences adaptive potential across spatial and temporal gradients through the lens of marine genomics. I am currently a postdoc in the Pespeni lab at the University of Vermont, where my focus system is the purple sea urchin and its role in the intertidal community. I am applying seascape genomics to understand environmental stressors driving selection, and subsequently forecast (mal)adaptation across populations using genomic forecasting.
Research background
My PhD focused on fisheries induced evolution and the role of recovery (cessation of fishing) on influencing genomic architecture and diversity across fish experiencing size-selection. Additionally, I focused on the multistressor interaction of long-term thermal stress and size-selective fishing. Across this system I integrated genomics, physiology, behaviour and the microbiome to understand fitness consequences under global change in the context of experimental evolution.
During my postdoc I continued my interest with multistressor systems through the lens of genomics, switching systems to the purple sea urchin, utilising a holistic seascape genomics approach to understand how environmental stressors drive genomic adaptation across a latitudinal broad population as well as using genomic forecasting to predict future (mal)adaptation. I continue to expand beyond a single species approach to look at these patterns across communities including the intertidal and subtidal.
My expertise lie in large-scale ecological genomics and understanding present and future adaptation across populations from an individual species to community perspective. I strive to understand how future climatic change will affect species health using a holistic framework from genome to phenotype to behaviour and community interactions.
